Anna Inkeri Björklund
Jälkipyykki
Anna Inkeri Björklund (b. 1991) is a visual artist and curator based in Fiskars, Finland. Björklund works with photography, media art, and sculpture, but light is her most essential artistic tool. She develops her cyanotype works using sunlight, allowing natural light to become an active participant in the creation of each piece. Her practice often explores contemporary phenomena and themes through traditional techniques.
Björklund's works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Finland and internationally. She has received several grants and an honourable mention in a public art competition.
Jälkipyykki (afterwash) responds to the cultural policies of recent years. The works combine the traditional cyanotype technique with a contemporary subject: depicting the artist's own underwear, they reference the phenomenon of selling used underwear online. The series originates from a question: how can an artist make a living amid ongoing cuts to cultural funding?
At the same time, the works explore femininity and its expression. Archaic female roles appear as ironic references, revealing how deeply rooted and persistent gendered expectations remain. The red colour palette, combined with the intimate subject matter, creates a tension that is both seductive and threatening. But to whom?
Cutting cultural funding without comprehensively considering its wider consequences may leave behind an unpredictable mess. Its traces may become visible in the content of art itself, in the narrowing of public discourse, and in the strengthening of conservative values.
