Iida Viio
To see movement in the sky
Iida Viio (b. 2002) is a photographic artist based in Helsinki working primarily with lens-based-practices and text. Viio is a student at Lahti Institute of Design and Fine Arts.
In their practice, Viio combines documentary methods and performative narratives, exploring the act of noticing and seeing. Questions of polarisation and one’s relationship with the natural world are reoccuring themes in their work.
Viio draws inspiration from lived experiences, small gestures of noticing and written language.
”To see movement in the sky.” (Nähdäkseni liikettä taivaalla) is an attempt to observe something that often remains unnoticed.
As part of the work, I follow the possible winter migration route of the Great Cormorants, travelling by land towards the Adriatic Sea. The birds become a reflection for emotions, mirroring the possibility to cross borders and always return home.
The four-month-long photographic and literary documentation unfolds into a narrative in which I explore what it is like to observe another being—or to possibly become observed by one.
