Inkeri Rantala (b. 1988, Tampere) is an artist who, after spending time in Turku, is now based in Helsinki. Rantala works primarily with painting and ceramic sculpture at her studio in Helsinki.

In her work, Rantala explores the dialogue between the self and society, with a particular focus on the construction of gender and the interaction between the child self and the adult self, as well as playfulness and childlike ways of seeing and experiencing the world. Her works frequently incorporate symbols of popular culture, such as cigarettes, alongside influences drawn from the constantly evolving language of contemporary speech.

“Girl dinner” has become an established expression in contemporary language for a meal that requires minimal effort or cooking while still being delicious. As a term, girl dinner captures something essential about stereotypical girlhood: a sense of carefree pleasure, hedonism, and an appreciation for small, cute details.

Consisting primarily of ceramic sculptures, the exhibition invites the viewer to a Girl Dinner, gathering around a dinner-table installation. The works explore themes of girlhood, including through the lens of the mythology surrounding it, in Rantala’s characteristic manner: ironic, playful, and socially critical.
