LAYERED REFLECTIONS
The exhibition "Layered Reflections" is a journey through fleeting experiences that have layered onto the surface of the image. The works contain traces of memories from moments when the eye has been caught by the surrounding spaces, and the mind has detached from everything else. I have returned to this state of my memories while painting, guided by impulses rising from colors with quick movements.
The paintings draw their impulses from something the eye has repeatedly focused on during long forest walks, emerging consciously or stealthily during the creation of the work. These fleeting experiences connect with previous life experiences and encounters with nature. When I walk in nature and become aware of observing a particular detail, passing people seem less real than the trees and the light on their bare trunks.
The experience leaves a mark and a vivid image that intensifies again at the moment of painting. I do not paint a specific visual image but an experience. Capturing it with colors is also a journey through time, involving memories of similar moments throughout life: as a child in Australia among evergreen trees with slightly grayish green, a trip in Singapore deep into the rainforest, a pause in the Finnish winter observing the clear armpits of young aspens in the home yard, carefully walking on rain-slick rocks on an islet in the Turku archipelago, the lush scent of a deciduous forest in Lohja.
