Lorenzo Marotti

Compositions

Lorenzo Marotti was born in Rome, Italy in 1992. He is trained as a chemist and he works with analog photography, focusing on alternative/experimental photography and exploring old photographic techniques – eventually adopting cyanotype as one of his main media of expression. The technique of cyanotype offers him the chance of combining photography with chemistry, whilst investigating fundamental questions related to existence and perception.

The works on view are cyanotypes – a historic photographic process in which paper is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion, exposed to light, and developed in water. Each piece is a singular record of chemical reaction and time, shaped by gesture, light, and chance.

In this new body of work, cyanotypes are assembled into compositions: singlets, diptychs, and extended grids. Through juxtaposition, the individual pieces enter into quiet dialogue, contrasting colours, patterns, and densities. Each is an experiment in resonance: shapes, tones, and surfaces engage within and across paper borders. In bringing these works together, new tensions emerge – absence is mirrored by presence.

These groupings are acts of both intuition and experiment. Embedded in the process is a sense of depth and play: in this poetic assembly, meaning is not imposed but discovered.

Titled ‘COMPOSITIONS’, the exhibition explores the boundaries of fragmentation, repetition, and combination. It reflects on the relationships between part and whole, structure and intuition. How does an image become more than itself when placed next to another? What emerges from pairing one silence with another?
