Noora Huolman

Poistoja I

Noora Huolman (b. 1992) lives and works in Imatra, Finland. She graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from LAB University of Applied Sciences in the summer of 2025 and will begin her master’s studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki, in 2026.

Huolman challenges the traditional field of printmaking through her methods, which involve tearing, sanding, scraping, and whipping paper dyed with intaglio ink. Her practice explores traces, movement, and the materiality of paper. She reflects on her own artistic process in relation to printmaking, a discipline on which her self-developed working methods are strongly based. In 2026, Huolman will hold three solo exhibitions in Helsinki, Lahti, and Kotka.

Poistoja I (Removals I)

“I apply red pigment directly onto the paper using a metal spatula and, after a moment, remove it by any means necessary. I am fascinated by the act of removal. While removing, one can observe the continuous transformation of the material and how every action leaves a unique trace. Removal as an action is highly holistic, as the entire body becomes activated through the movement. Emotion is always present, and the working process is very physical. Feelings manifest as impulses that can completely change the direction of the work. Emotions and bodily movement always influence what the final result will look like. I scrape the surface away as if trying to undo what has been done. Every action leaves a trace, which the paper absorbs and records within its layers.”

The exhibition Poistoja I explores the materiality of paper through various methods of removal. Techniques used in the exhibition include sanding with a kitchen sponge and scraping with an etching needle.

In 2026, Huolman will present three solo exhibitions that address different methods of removal and changes in the materiality of paper. Poistoja I is presented at Koola Art Space, Poistoja II in Lahti (Galleria Uusi Kipinä), and Poistoja III in Kotka (Galleria Uusikuva). Each exhibition space presents a distinct and unique body of work.
